Reader’s Question:

I am a resident of Alabama. I was told that when you get whole life insurance, it also means you will be paying for it as long as you’re alive. Is this true?

Desmond

Birmingham, AL

Traditional life insurance policies used to be that way–as long as you want to have continued coverage or have your policy enforced, payments are demanded on an annual basis for the rest of your life. Although this type of policy is still in the market, life insurance agents don’t offer them anymore as there are more payment-friendly life insurance products available.

This type of whole life insurance product that gives the policyholder a certain amount of time to pay for a whole life policy is called a limited premium whole life policy. Limited premiums were devised by life insurers because they have noticed that a lot of whole life policies are being surrendered by policyholders who have passed the age of 50. These policyholders figure that, at least, they’d be able to get some of their money back, as they find it impossible to pay forever for something that will bear fruit only when they die.

These limited premium policies allow policyholders now to pay life insurance premiums jut for 10, 15 or 20 years, depending on what age he started, and still get coverage for the rest of their lives. Limited payment is possible because the cash value and dividends the policyholder accumulated over the years are enough to pay for the whole life policy.

Desmond, if you want to have whole life coverage and don’t want to pay forever, be sure to ask your agent in Alabama to give you a quote for a limited premium whole life insurance policy.

Reader’s Question:

I recently got married here in Alabama. I want to know what riders I can attach to the basic life insurance policy I plan to get that will greatly benefit my wife and children in case I die or get disabled from an accident.

Benedict

Hoover, AL

I am sure that you can take advantage of the Accidental Death Benefit Rider. In the event of death due to an accident, this rider will give your family an amount equal to your face value, thereby doubling your death benefits.

Or you may also want to attach an Accidental Death and Dismemberment Rider. This rider will give you the same coverage as the Accidental Death Benefit Rider, but will also cover you in case of dismemberment had you survived the accident.

If you want, you can also add a Disability Income Rider to your life insurance policy. This provides for a monthly income if you become disabled. For example, you got into an accident which caused you to be blind for two years. In those two years, your life insurance will pay you a predetermined monthly income.

And another important rider which will greatly help you is the Waiver of Premium Rider. This rider will pay for your premium once you get disabled. Meaning, you won’t have to worry about a single cent in paying for your premiums for the rest of your life.

Benedict, for quotes for your life insurance policy with riders attached to them, please call your agent in Alabama.

Reader’s Question:

How will I know the term to choose and premium to purchase with my life insurance policy? I live in Alabama.

Victor

Birmingham AL

A term insurance policy offers protection with a period ranging from 1 to 30 years. In choosing the term, you consider the term that will match your need for protection. If the reason for purchasing a life insurance policy is to protect your 7-year old child until they graduate from college, you can choose the term with at least 15 years.

The premium that you will be willing to purchase is based on your income, how much you owe and own and your beneficiaries. If you are married and have children, your spouse and children will be you beneficiaries.

Different types of term insurance have different premiums to offer. There is what we call renewable or convertible life insurance policy that can provide the protection you want but has higher premiums.

Note however that the premiums that you will pay depend on many factors. Few of these are age, gender, the type of insurance you want to buy and your health conditions. You will be asked for health history, like your smoking habit, and other personal information. With some life insurance, premium payment may change. Without the guarantee, insurance company may increase the premium of decrease the amount of benefits. Thus, it is important to find out why and how your premiums and benefits are calculated and what is the guarantee. Ensure that the company in Alabama provides the guaranteed premiums and benefits that you expect.

Reader’s Question:

I got involved in an accident but I was not at fault. I received some injuries and I would like to know what I need to do to cover the medical costs? We live in Montgomery, Alabama.

Carol

Montgomery, AL

I suggest that you contact the insurance provider of the driver who was found at fault to place a claim for the bodily injuries that caused in the accident. Although the medical expenses were paid for by another company however the at fault party is not to pay for other kind of damages due to an accident.

In general, there are no set amounts for certain bodily injuries or damages in which there are no medical expenses associated since insurance carriers are the ones who determine settlements on a various factors using their own internal rating system that adhere to state laws.

If you want to get more information with regards to the auto insurance claim after you have put it with the at-fault’s driver’s insurance carrier I suggest that you contact the Alabama Department of Insurance. You may also seek legal help to better understand the AL laws regarding your case.
