Readers Question:
I am about to get auto insurance in Alabama. I just moved from California so I am clueless about auto insurance stuff here. What auto insurance coverage should I get? How can I get the cheapest car insurance? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Marcella

Birmingham, AL
Hello Marcella. Welcome to Alabama!
Auto insurance in Alabama is simple – just purchase car insurance coverage that includes liability coverage then your  ok. Of course you need to purchase car insurance coverage that meets the required auto insurance limits in the state of Alabama plus you need to buy it from a licensed car insurance company in your home state also.
So what are the required minimum auto insurance limits in Alabama? That would be:

$20,000 for bodily injury liability for every person in one accident
$40,000 for all injuries in one accident and;
$10,000 for damage on property in one accident.
Remember Marcella, that you are required to purchase auto insurance in Alabama from auto insurance company that is required to conduct business here. Plus, you must also carry proof that you have indeed Alabama auto insurance whenever you drive. In general, an insurance card given by your insurer is the best proof of auto insurance coverage.
Meanwhile, since it appeared to me that you are looking for car insurance here in Alabama, you may want to consider few things to get cheap car insurance:

Shopping around for auto insurance quotes through the Web. The more auto insurance quotes you got the higher the chances of getting the best auto insurance price.
Enrolling in a defensive driving class can give you a discount of around 5%.
Completing a mature driving class (if you are a senior driver) can lower your auto insurance premiums up to 10% as mandated by the Alabama state law.
Installing anti-theft devices could lower your auto insurance premiums too.
Maintaining a good driving record would allow you to get a good driver discount offered by auto insurance companies

pstrongReaders Question:/strong/p
pI am from Alabama. I have an SUV that needs to be insured. I heard that getting SUV insurance is more expensive that getting insurance for regular vehicles. Why is that? And what should I do to get affordable vehicle insurance premiums for my SUV?/p
pRita/p
pMontgomery, AL/p
pYou are correct Rita, as compared to insuring regular vehicles, the insurance for SUV in Alabama is quite high. And thats because if you get involved in an accident, your SUV would cause severe damage to another car as compared to when you drive smaller vehicles. In fact, SUV insurance is higher by around 10-20% as opposed to insurance for smaller vehicles./p
pAs you know, in setting vehicle insurance rates, insurers also consider how much it would cost them to cover your vehicle insurance claims. Even though majority think that driving SUV gives you more protection as opposed to operating smaller vehicles like sedan, we cannot denied the fact that SUV cause serious damage on other vehicles if involved in an accident. So with higher damages come higher vehicle insurance claims thus higher premiums for your SUV insurance./p
pMoreover, in 2004, the Highway Loss Data Institute noted that in terms of being the most stolen vehicle, Cadillac Escalade topped the list. And this particular class of vehicle is an SUV. With this, you may have an idea on how owning an SUV is riskier not only because of the damage it may cause to other vehicles but also on bigger possibility that it might be stolen. Car thieves find SUV as their preferred cars to steal. And car insurance companies know that risk. So the risk for replacing SUVs is higher as compared to other types of vehicle. For replacing Cadillac Escalade for instance, vehicle insurance providers will spend more or less $18, 000./p
pIf you think that getting cheap vehicle insurance premiums for your SUV is beyond unimaginable, then thats not really the case. In fact, you can get cheap vehicle insurance rates for your SUV. How? By just surfing the Internet. Get as many vehicle insurance quotes that you get – the more the better I would say. And believe me, form those vehicle insurance quotes, you can probably land a very good SUV insurance deal./p
pAlso, your driving record plays a very important role in determining your vehicle insurance rates. If you have very good driving records, no traffic tickets on your records or youve never been involved in any traffic accidents then you can get lower your insurance for your SUV./p
pFor more information about SUV insurance in Alabama, you can also ask your vehicle insurance agent./p

Reader’s Question:

I just had my first car in my hometown in Birmingham Alabama AL which I acquired through a bank loan. I have comprehensive auto insurance coverage on it aside from the mandatory 25/50/25 liability coverage required by law. But my best friend said I still need gap insurance and I can’t understand why, since my car is barely a few weeks old.

Kathryn

Birmingham, AL

Congratulations on your brand new car, Kathryn.

Your best friend in Birmingham Alabama AL gave you one good piece of advice. She knows what really happens when there’s a claim on your comprehensive auto insurance coverage.

Okay, your car is a sleek and shiny baby now. You’re a safe and skillful driver and nothing should happen to you when you’re out on the road driving. But life is full of surprises. One day you leave your car in the parking lot, and when you return it isn’t there anymore. A car thief is now the new owner.

You file a claim on your auto insurance policy, and guess what. Your auto insurance company in Birmingham Alabama AL says you get paid, yes, but the amount you receive is something like 70% to 80% of the purchase price (the amount financed by the bank). At the end of the day you no longer have a car and still owe the bank 20% to 30% of the amount it financed. Ouch.

But if you have a gap auto insurance policy, it will cover the difference between your bank loan and the actual cash value assessed by your auto insurance company.

Late Payment in Job-Based Health Insurance Policy Alabama

Reader’s Question:

What happens if my employer here in Alabama fails to pay my health insurance policy on time?

Michael

Montgomery, AL

As you know, the health insurance policy from your employer in Alabama is a form of benefit you receive for rendering services in that particular company. In most cases, even family members are included in the coverage. The contract for Employer Group Health Insurance Policy is drawn up between your employer and the health insurance company.

So, here goes some awful news. If your employer does not pay the premiums on time, it is possible for you to lose your health insurance policy. The coverage for your family will become unavailable, as well. To make matters worse, you can’t run after the insurer for this because, of course, it can’t be expected to cover the medical claims for health insurance coverage that hasn’t been paid for. Moreover, your employer has no obligation to notify you of their late payment of premiums.

It is difficult to say what you can do to fix this problem. Health insurance policy is controlled at the state level; Each state has a different set of rules. Both the Alabama Department of Insurance and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration are places you can go to if you need clarifications on state regulations. They might also be able to help you with problems such as this.

Life Insurance Policies Alabama

Reader’s Question:

Would it be better to get term life insurance coverage here in Alabama while I am young and then switch it over to a whole life policy before I retire?

Olga

Huntsville, AL

You have a very interesting question. Depending on your medium to long-term financial goals, your age and how healthy you will be ten or twenty years from now, it may not be such a bad idea to get a term life insurance initially, to take advantage of cheap life insurance rates and then eventually switch over to a whole life insurance policy there in Alabama.

This is a good strategy for those who may not be able to afford expensive whole life insurance premiums but would still like to provide financial security to their dependents in the event that the main income earner passes away. Those raising a family, or sending someone to school, paying mortgage on a house, or paying for someone’s health care needs and are on a tight budget would find this strategy useful.

If you see yourself having more financial capacity in the future (preferably after the term life policy is up) that would be the perfect time to get a whole life policy. What would even be better is to get a life insurance provider that would provide you an option to switch your term life policy into a whole life policy without having to undergo any physical or medical exams, or having to submit your health and medical history. The services of an experienced and knowledgeable life insurance broker would be to your advantage in this case.

Whole Life Insurance Alabama, AL

Reader’s Question:

I am a resident of Alabama. I was told that when you get whole life insurance, it also means you will be paying for it as long as you’re alive. Is this true?

Desmond

Birmingham, AL

Traditional life insurance policies used to be that way–as long as you want to have continued coverage or have your policy enforced, payments are demanded on an annual basis for the rest of your life. Although this type of policy is still in the market, life insurance agents don’t offer them anymore as there are more payment-friendly life insurance products available.

This type of whole life insurance product that gives the policyholder a certain amount of time to pay for a whole life policy is called a limited premium whole life policy. Limited premiums were devised by life insurers because they have noticed that a lot of whole life policies are being surrendered by policyholders who have passed the age of 50. These policyholders figure that, at least, they’d be able to get some of their money back, as they find it impossible to pay forever for something that will bear fruit only when they die.

These limited premium policies allow policyholders now to pay life insurance premiums jut for 10, 15 or 20 years, depending on what age he started, and still get coverage for the rest of their lives. Limited payment is possible because the cash value and dividends the policyholder accumulated over the years are enough to pay for the whole life policy.

Desmond, if you want to have whole life coverage and don’t want to pay forever, be sure to ask your agent in Alabama to give you a quote for a limited premium whole life insurance policy.

Life Insurance Policy Riders in Alabama

Reader’s Question:

I recently got married here in Alabama. I want to know what riders I can attach to the basic life insurance policy I plan to get that will greatly benefit my wife and children in case I die or get disabled from an accident.

Benedict

Hoover, AL

I am sure that you can take advantage of the Accidental Death Benefit Rider. In the event of death due to an accident, this rider will give your family an amount equal to your face value, thereby doubling your death benefits.

Or you may also want to attach an Accidental Death and Dismemberment Rider. This rider will give you the same coverage as the Accidental Death Benefit Rider, but will also cover you in case of dismemberment had you survived the accident.

If you want, you can also add a Disability Income Rider to your life insurance policy. This provides for a monthly income if you become disabled. For example, you got into an accident which caused you to be blind for two years. In those two years, your life insurance will pay you a predetermined monthly income.

And another important rider which will greatly help you is the Waiver of Premium Rider. This rider will pay for your premium once you get disabled. Meaning, you won’t have to worry about a single cent in paying for your premiums for the rest of your life.

Benedict, for quotes for your life insurance policy with riders attached to them, please call your agent in Alabama.
