Teen Automobile Insurance Alabama
Reader’s Question:
I bought a vehicle for my seventeen year old daughter and I am wondering if it can be registered under her name? is there an age requirement for registering automobiles in Birmingham, Alabama?
Jane
Birmingham, AL
A minor generally cannot enter into a contract so it is less possible that a teenager can be a sole owner of an automobile. A minor normally cannot own property until he/she turns eighteen and become an adult. The minor’s parents or legal guardian technically own the property in most situation. For example if a parent or legal guardian will co-sign on a loan for an automobile, the minor can buy an automobile, but the parent will still be the legal owner of the car.
Those states that will permit a minor to register an automobile normally will require a parent or legal guardian to sign on any legal contracts or documents since they are still a minor.
I did not find any information in the Alabama driver manual that state age requirement or restrictions on an individual who wants to register an automobile under their name. To obtain more information on the minimum age requirement for automobile ownership in Birmingham, Alabama you will need to contact the Alabama Motor Vehicle Division.
